Stingray Victim, Bertakis, in Rehab

The Lighthouse Point man who survived a stingray attack has been moved to an in-patient rehabilitation center at North Broward Medical Center. He is listed in good condition.

James Bertakis, 81, was on his boat early in October when a spotted eagle ray jumped out of the water and struck him in the chest. The fish left a toxic barb lodged in Bertakis' left lung.

He moved to a regular room about Thanksgiving before going to North Broward, hospital officials said. ''The point of the rehabilitation unit is to help patients regain as much of their normal function as possible,'' said Jenny Mackie, a spokeswoman for North Broward.
